Sofija Stefanović

Sofija Stefanović is a full professor at the Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade.

Sofija’s research in the field of prehistoric bioarchaeology in the Laboratory for Bioarchaeology, focuses on investigating ancient biosystems to better understand phenomena relevant also to modern populations, such as fertility studies and the impact of societal transitions on the health and physical activities of women, children, and men. She is the first scientist from Serbia to receive support from the European Research Council for the BIRTH project, which investigated prehistoric motherhood. Currently, she is concentrating on the bioarchaeology of children, specifically examining the impact of biological sex on the growth, development, health, and social status of children during the Bronze Age, as part of the INFANO project (funded by the Fund for Science of the Republic of Serbia).
